Historical descriptionThe Virginia Museum of the Civil War stands at New Market Battlefield and interprets the May 1864 battle in which VMI cadets fought alongside Confederate forces. Operated within Virginia Military Institute’s museum system, the site joins battlefield landscape, galleries, artifacts, film, and the story of the Bushong family farm. It provides an unusually direct place-based setting for studying the participants, memory, and material culture of the campaign.
